  • Old Habits Die Hard

It's interesting - they say you can't teach an old dog new tricks... but I wonder which is more difficult: Teaching an old dog new tricks, or breaking old habits?  I find it a lot easier to learn something new than to break old habits.  Although, in some cases, it's really a toss-up for which classification an action could fall under.

For example, I recently changed the email address that I use with my Facebook account.  That wouldn't seem like a big deal, right?  The thing is, I've been logging in with my other address for over a year.  It was so easy - firstinitiallastname1@myschool.edu.  Piece of cake.  However, since I graduated in August, my email account became inactive in about November.  I felt like I shouldn't be logging in with an email address that doesn't exist.  (It kind of seems like Facebook would have something that would verify your address as being valid every once in a while... although, until I changed to that address, I had used my inactive undergrad email address for over a year with no problems.)  So, as my remedy, I used my somewhat functioning alumni address.  It works, but it isn't attached to an actual account; it just forwards it to my Gmail.

You would think that this solution would be quite nice.  I didn't get kicked out of my school's network, as I did when I deleted my undergrad email from the account.  And, my log-in email is quite similar to my old one: firstinitiallastname1@alumni.myschool.edu.  That darn "alumni" throws me off almost every time.  I've been using it for over a week, and still forget to include it!

I'm just not sure which it is... putting away my old habit of typing the other email address, or learning the new trick of adding "alumni" when I type the address.  I guess that's how a lot of  things work, though.  You must put aside something that you've already done in order to learn something new, even if you don't cognitively realize it... so I suppose it's all a matter of perspective, whether you're putting away something old, or learning something new...
