  • Netflix Makes Me Laugh

About a month ago I decided to try Netflix, for streaming movies online.  I enjoy the convenience, although some of the movies I want to watch aren't available in that format, and require an account upgrade.  My need for entertainment is not such that I need something like that (perhaps when I'm faced with footing a cable bill, or spending $10/month, I'll make the jump).

In any case, some of the questions it asks, in order to determine your viewing preferences make me laugh.  After giving a few Disney movies very high ratings (who doesn't love 101 Dalmations?  Seriously... I love that movie, still), along with some Veggie Tales (love them!), I was asked how often I watch movies intended for 2-5 year olds.  Given the options - Never, Sometimes, Often - I was torn.  I wish there was a choice that falls between Sometimes and Often.  I'm one of those people who never wants to give something the highest rating, unless it's absolutely amazing.  (Thinking back, though, I probably gave 101 Dalmations a full 5 stars.)

Along with asking me how often I watch movies for toddlers, I've been asked how often I watch "cerebral" movies, crime movies, thrillers, documentaries, comedies, and "witty" movies.  It's hard to say, but I think I've thoroughly confused the movie-matching section on the site.  I almost always give a noncommittal reply; I do, indeed, watch movies that fall into whatever category that's being questioned, "sometimes."  I can also go from watching Mulan (if it was available online!  Argh!) one day to watching Food, Inc., the next.

The latest thing that's made me chuckle, though, is a row of movies that were selected, to fit my tastes.  The row's title?  Feel-good Girl Power Movies for ages 5-7.  The titles that were generated to match my interests include: Switching Goals (a Mary Kate and Ashley movie, haha), Horseland: Season 2, Eloise in Hollywood, and My Fair Madeline

I'm not sure which is worse: The fact that Netflix thinks I would like to watch feel-good girl power movies for ages 5-7... or the fact that I'm 23 years old, and had the instant reaction of, "ooh! Madeline!" when I saw the last selection in that row.
