Lately I've been thinking about things I would and wouldn't do, if I were heading off to college, knowing what I know now. Since I'm not doing that, I suppose writing a list will at least get it out of my head, so I can move on to thinking about other things. So, without delay, my list:
- Get to know professors. This doesn't mean I'd go to office hours all the time, but I would definitely make a bigger effort to get to know them. Not only will it help in the present, it will help in the future.
- Worry about grades. I always did pretty well. Once I transferred, I heard everyone complaining about how your best isn't good enough at L'universite... and to not be alarmed if you got mostly Bs and Cs. You know what? If I were going back, I'd say, "tough; I'm going to do better than that." Again, I wouldn't go to office hours all the time, but I would send in drafts of papers, and really try to engage in the classroom discussion if it meant raising my grade from a B+ to an A- (or, maybe even an A).
- Exercise more. I stayed active while I was in school, but I feel like I could have done more.
- Find nerdy friends. Having someone to commiserate with about the slackers makes things way more fun. I eventually did find one of these friends, but finding a few more would have been nice.
- Work less, get involved more. You know what? So far, no employers seem to care that I worked part-time while I was in school, so I could fund my education and repay my only loan at its six-month mark. I would've been just as well off working part-time in my college's town, and getting more involved in campus organizations.
- Either study more, or do more crazy things. One of the two.
- Study abroad. It might cost a lot, but it would be very cool.
